Daufuskie Island
Travel back in time on Daufuskie Island, a small sea island tucked between Hilton Head Island and Savannah and only accessible by ferry. Few paved roads, unspoiled white sand beaches, Spanish moss, and rich Gullah history all contribute to the "back-in-time" feel of this quiet island. Known as one of the best-kept secrets of the Lowcountry, only 400-or-so people call Daufuskie Island their permanent home, preserving the rich culture of their little piece of paradise. Daufuskie Island most notably served as the setting for The Water Is Wide, Pat Conroy's famous 1972 novel.
