Wadmalaw Island is a small community located off Johns Island and only about 45 minutes from downtown Charleston. A beloved retreat in winter and summer for locals in the area, Wadmalaw Island was first discovered in early colonial times, and great into a planting community by the late 19th century.
Home to the town of Rockville (established 1784), Wadmalaw Island still hosts the Rockville regatta which is a popular event each summer. Rockville will host the 122nd annual regatta in the summer of 2012. Also of interest is the Charleston Tea Plantation, the nations last working tea plantation which is open to visitors for tours and tastings.
